I love lists.
Top restaurants, favorite cities, top movies..whatever.

So i couldn't resist a posting of some of my favorite songs from the last few weeks.
I don't often have loads of free time to sit with entire albums anymore. My record label won't like to hear it, but I really enjoy buying singles. I'm the target market for iTunes, i guess.
This usually results in purchasing songs that I love and listening them into the ground.

Now, I should stop and clarify that my favorite song of all time is FLY ME TO THE MOON by Frank Sinatra. I also enjoy the version by Astrud Gilberto but this list will be narrowed to songs that i've been wearing out on my ipod recently.

so, here we go:

this is one of the best songs i've ever heard - the more i listen, i love it even more. Am I alone? Do you like the new single?

An amazing song from a friend of mine. Eliot and I were both in a contest at a local club in Houston 10 years ago, both of us broke and hoping to win $500 (i won a stereo,i think :) neither of us knowing if music would be our future. Eliot went on to sign with Universal and has toured with Counting Crows and others and become a wonderful songwriter. Check his music out at

i first heard this song in a subpar chick flick but the melody is addicting and we immediately searched for it on iTunes. His voice is haunting on this track.

Come on, its Travis. Great song from my favorite band.

Of all the Patty Griffin songs that i've loved over the years, this one still makes me cry like a baby. Nobody has a voice like Patty Griffin.

I've been such a huge fan of the seasonal ep's and this song stands out as a favorite.

I tried to pretend that John Mayer was not a genius because sometimes he makes funny faces when he sings and i found him a bit annoying early in his career. And then he released Continuum and I think its one of the best albums in decades. Simple in production and thougtful (for the most part) in lyric.

I'm such a fan of their music and this song is one of my favorite songs ever from DCB.

I'm out of town this week and Radiohead is playing in my hometown. A moment of silence, please.

Hearing these guys sing never gets old. This is a great song of worship.

your turn.
Tell me a few songs that you've got on repeat.
I need some new tunes.

dude...i'm with you on a few of those. belief is one song that i can never take off my playlist.

i'm diggin' the new death cab for cutie album right now - "narrow stairs"

also a buddy of mine named corey crowder just released his new single "southern way" on itunes. check it out.

Love Elliot Morris... Nice choice on Jon Foreman too.

someone already threw out my first choice -- new Death Cab for Cutie single (and album). Never get tired of these guys!

also, "discovered" this girl while in Italy (guess she's already big in Europe). anyway..thought I had made the discovery---you know, when you "find" an artist no one knows about--you know the feeling!! ; )

Walk into Starbucks in Houston, and 'bam' bubble is burst...they have her U.S. single release, "Mercy", as their "iTunes Pick of The Week"!! There goes my ego!!! : )

check her out, though --- 20-some odd years old, with the soulful voice of someone from the 60s. (and I guess if you go into SBUX, you can get her download for free!)

totally agree on the coldplay song. that song is just amazing. how they can pull off having a hit song with a stringed orchestra and a timpani, ill never know.

i remember one time you had a link to a new travis music video and i watched it and ever since I have really enjoyed his stuff. Really like Closer.

As far as some new stuff thats good. John Mayer's new single Say is excellent. Coldplays Viva La Vida is good, but have you heard Violet Hill? Addicting...I got it as a free download on their website.

downloading the new deathcab single right now

good to know there are more eliot morris fans out there..hoping to see him live soon

what's the name of the girl you're talking about?

you're right..only coldplay could stray so far from their core "sound" and still have such an epic song on their hands..i hadn't really thought about them that much, but now i'm counting down the days to get US tix

hoping to get the other coldplay single..i don't have that one
travis rules!

thanks guys
great to hear from all of you this morning

speaking of itunes target market, several of the singles on my list are the actual songs from the ipod/itunes commercials. how ridiculously effective is that for marketing? you can say it- i'm a complete corporate tool. oh well. at least i'm enjoying myself. without further ado, my list:

1. superstar - lupe fiasco
2. all the young dudes - mott the hoople
hang me out to dry - cold war kids
3. long road to ruin - foo fighters
4. anyone else but you - moldy peaches (juno soundtrack)
5. flathead - the fratellis
6. jerk it out - ceasars
7. someday - the strokes
8. 1234 - feist (try to listen to this one and stay unhappy)
9. sleeping lessons - the shins
10. how it ends - devotchka (catch these guys on the "little miss sunshine" soundtrack- talk about haunting and heart rending- highly recommend their entire album for something different and beautiful and fun)

whoops! looked like i tried to slip in a "top 11" list by not numbering "hang me out to dry". We'll call that one #2.5.

5. Sara Groves – Loving a Person
6. Brandon Heath – Red Sky

Speaking of songs that make me cry...try "Come to Me" by Kari Jobe. Sadly, it's not on iTunes (I'll let you "borrow" the mp3 if you want!) But you have to listen to it with headphones and let yourself "be in the moment" (no interruptions). Voice of an angel.
Three other ladies who soothe my soul: Mindy Smith, Alison Krauss and Jill Paquette.
I have to agree with John Mayer's "Say" and I heard "Daughters" again the other it (even though I have two father-in-law gets the cred on this one).
Say what you will about his American Idol-ness, but Chris Sligh is a brilliant song-writer. Check out "Empty Me" for some raw authenticity.

better than love - griffin house
closer - joshua radin
from where you are - lifehouse
beautiful son - without gravity
only you - david crowder band
i found a reason - cat power
the luckiest - ben folds
cannonball - damien rice
if you knew - jeff buckley

also, check out obadiah parker's cover of hey ya (outkast song). not a fan of the original, but this cover is great.

thanks for recommending eliot moris, i'm listening to him for the first time and it's definitely promising.

hope to see you guys again soon!

Robbie - the girl I was referring to (sorry, thought I had written her name in)is, "Duffy". Kind of weird name --- maybe it's her last name?! Anyhow...she's all over Houston radio now, so I'm sure you've already heard her, and just didn't know it!

*We may see you at the "Hydrate Hope" event tonight.

Many you've heard of - A few, perhaps not. Drop a couple on your ipod. They'll grow on you.

Counting on a Miracle - Bruce Springsteen. Little known tune from The Rising CD. One of the world's great storytellers.

Rise - RSB - And no, I'm not sucking up! ;-)

One - U2. Makes me just stop, close my eyes and think.

Always - Bon Jovi. Great Ballad.

I Wish I Were Blind - Another obscure Bruce Springsteen tune. This time from the MTV Unplugged series. Yeah, I kinda like Bruuuuce.

Something's Gotta Give - Joel & Luke. My wife and daughter went to the SHE event with Rebecca St. James. These, I believe are her brothers. Great song. The tune Missing is very good as well.

You Are Loved - Josh Groban. Reminds each of us to not give up.

I'll Stand by You - The Pretenders. Great lyrics. Burned the song and printed the lyrics and gave them to each of my daughters.

hey robbie. here's some i like as of late...

richard butler - california (i liked him in psychedelic furs but his solo record is achingly beautiful)

hammock - this kind of life keeps breaking your heart (ambient brilliance. stunning)

elton john - mona lisas and madhatters (one of his under the radar songs that i love)

playradioplay! - i'm a pirate, you're a princess (guilty pleasure of mine. really good manipulation of electronica and loops with an acoustic guitar)

the avett brothers - salina (just listen to it. you'll fall in love, too)

elbow - scattered black and whites (if you're a coldplay fan, you could easily be an elbow fan. and this brilliant song is lesser known)

rolling stones - play with fire (rediscovered this song after seeing, 'the darjeeling limited')

mgmt - electric feel (makes me want to dance and to also put this on mix tapes for girls, so that they will dance. ...with me)

south - shallow (tasty guitar. great tone. great melodies too)

william fitzsimmons - passion play (i think you'd like him, robbie)
